The short version
Time is spent by selected actions and must be budgeted alongside combat and relationship choices.
Published evidence
Each day and night provides eight units, costs are shown with hourglass icons, and ordinary exploration does not drain the clock. Some quests, dialogue choices, and skills use time.
Player takeaway
A useful planning loop is: check form, inspect cost, identify likely consequence, then commit or preserve the units for another thread.
Known limit
No pre-release guide can truthfully provide an optimal full route because complete costs and outcomes are not public.
Planning rule
Apply the how time works as a resource answer together with three checks: which form Coen currently has, how many hourglass units the next action shows, and which other thread would be delayed. Free exploration and charged quest actions are different categories, so route advice should never deduct time merely because a player walked, searched, or opened the map.
